J.L. Patterson to Design Waste-by-Rail Project

(11/01/2005)
By Staff

J.L. Patterson & Associates Inc., an Orange-based civil/trackwork/structural engineering firm, has been awarded a contract by the sanitation district of Los Angeles County to provide preliminary engineering services for the design of the Mesquite Regional Landfill and Railroad Spur, a rail-served landfill site in Imperial County, approximately 200 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

JLP will lead project management and design of a 5-mi. rail spur and intermodal yard. The contract includes civil, structural, drainage; ingress and egress; geotechnical investigation; and survey portions of the project.

The concept of transporting refuse by rail is called waste-by-rail.

The Mesquite Regional Landfill is fully permitted to accept residual solid waste transported from Southern California communities by rail. The approved landfill footprint of 2,290 acres will provide capacity for approximately 600 million tons of solid waste and 100 years of operation at a maximum of 20,000 tons per day.
