San Diego-based Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects has been selected by the County of San Diego's Department of Parks and Recreation to design the new 5,600-sq.-ft. Visitor Center at San Elijo Lagoon, one of the few remaining coastal wetlands in California.
The wildlife oasis in Encinitas includes about 900 acres of protected habitat.
The goal of the new center and its interactive exhibits is to increase public awareness of the lagoon and its dynamic coastal setting, home to more than 700 species of plants and animals. The project includes designing a new two-story visitor center to replace the existing building, including all interior exhibits and displays.
The visitor center is seeking a LEED gold rating for weaving energy-efficient and sustainable design concepts into the coastal construction.
