Retooled Boulevard and Freeway Ramp Open in San Francisco

(11/01/2005)
By Staff

Construction has been completed for a six-lane Octavia Boulevard and a Central Freeway off-ramp in San Francisco 15 years after the Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged the freeway, causing its closure.

The $62-million Central Freeway replacement was a joint project between the city of San Francisco, Caltrans and the San Francisco Transportation Authority. The Dept. of Public Works designed and constructed the boulevard portion of the project and San Rafael-based Ghilotti Bros. was the general contractor. South San Francisco-based ProVen Management was the general contractor for the on- and off-ramps.

The Fell Street ramp, which ran overhead for approximately 1 mi. between Mission and Fell streets, was replaced by a new two-way ramp that touches down at Market Street and connects to the new Octavia Boulevard.
