Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of this year with completion scheduled for 2012. Anshen + Allen is the architect on the project. The same team also worked on two other Santa Clara Valley Medical Center projects in recent years – the Specialty Center and North Tower.

The five-story, 375,000-sq-ft project will serve as a rehabilitation center for traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. The 168-bed building will include a rehabilitation therapy center, aquatic therapy pools, support offices and a pharmacy.

The replacement hospital project is being constructed to achieve a LEED certification. Green features that will be included in the facility are an enhanced exterior wall system to minimize heat loss and gain and improve patient and staff comfort; low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) building materials to improve indoor air quality; water efficient plumbing fixtures; three green roof areas to reduce surface water runoff and improve views from patient rooms; recycling of a high percentage of construction waste; use of sustainably harvested wood; and exterior lighting to reduce night-time light pollution.

“We are proud to continue our long standing relationship with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with the construction of this important healthcare facility to benefit the patients served by the campus and to further the Medical Center’s goals of providing world-class treatment to Santa Clara County and the surrounding communities,” says Kevin Antonelli, vice president and general manager of Turner’s San Jose operations.

In November 2008, the voters of Santa Clara County overwhelmingly supported Measure A, the bond measure that helps Santa Clara Valley Medical Center meet the state’s mandate to be seismically safe. Measure A provides funding to upgrade and replace hospital facilities at SCVMC, the community’s biggest, busiest and only public hospital.

The SCVMC Seismic Safety Project will be completed in two phases. The first phase includes the demolition of old buildings to make room for a new building, approved design of a new hospital bed building, construction of a new parking structure and the new hospital bed building, and seismic upgrades to other hospital buildings.
