Affirmed Housing Group with Mayor Jerry Sanders and Councilmember Kevin Faulconer recently celebrated the grand opening of Ten Fifty B Street Apartments, the tallest 100% affordable tower on the west coast.
Also lauded for its environmentally-friendly features, Ten Fifty B is expected to receive LEED gold certification.
Turner Construction was the general contractor on the $90-million project.
Ten Fifty B features 229 affordable apartments in studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom designs. Designed by San Diego-based Martinez + Cutri, the 23-story development in the heart of downtown San Diego also includes 14,000 sq ft of commercial space. Other amenities include multiple tot lots, barbecue and picnic areas, an outdoor fire pit, more than 7,000 sq ft of open space, underground parking, a computer lab/business center with access to computers and free internet, a community room, after-school programs, onsite management and maintenance, and a 100% non-smoking environment.
Ten Fifty B’s sustainable features include solar photovoltaic panels to produce electricity for lighting in the common areas, water run-off collection used for terrace planting irrigation, low flow water fixtures, energy efficient appliances, locally sourced and recycled materials and solar efficient windows. Approximately 90% of units offer views, allowing for natural light and decreased daytime electricity usage.
“We are excited that this quality, new high-rise will provide exceptional housing to those who need it most, as every unit is affordable,” says James Silverwood, president of Affirmed Housing Group, the developer. “This unique project is helping set a new precedent for smart, sustainable growth.”
