The winning projects, along with all of the Constructor Awards finalists named in this year’s competition, were honored as the “best of the best” in California construction during the 2012 Awards Banquet and presentation at The Palace Hotel, San Francisco, on April 14. The prestigious black tie event, the “Oscars” evening for the construction industry, was attended by more than 300 people from top construction firms throughout the state.

In addition to naming the Constructor Awards winners and finalists, AGC of California presented awards to outstanding individuals and recognized projects that demonstrated excellent partnering efforts.

AGC presented its annual Contractor Achievement Award to Marshall Agee of Agee Construction Corp., Fresno. The award honored Agee’s many years of service and accomplishments in the construction industry, including his active involvement in AGC of California for 20 years and involvement in the general engineering construction industry for half a century.

Randy Iwasaki, Executive Director of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and former Director of Caltrans, received the 2012 AGC S.I.R. Achievement Award honoring his many achievements in the industry and commitment to Skill, Integrity and Responsibility, which is AGC’s motto.

Cathy Skeen of Excel Bonds & Insurance Services, Inc., received the Associate Achievement Award recognizing her more than 23 years of service to the construction industry and longtime active involvement and leadership in AGC of California, including serving as a member of the Executive Committee and as past Chair of the Associates Council among other things.

Two project teams received Excellence in Partnering Awards this year from AGC of California. In the “Projects Under $50 Million” category, Granite Construction Company and Caltrans received the award for the “Truckee River Canyon” project in Floriston. In the “Projects Over $50 Million” category, Flatiron Construction Corporation / Granite Construction Company and Caltrans received the Partnering award for the “I-880/SR 92 Interchange” project in Hayward.

In addition, the AGC Education Foundation presented its 2012 Education Friend Award to Frank Schipper, retired President of Schipper Construction Company, Santa Barbara. Schipper, who served as President of AGC of California in 2001, established the AGC Construction Education Foundation, an AGC entity that awards scholarships to students and promotes construction education throughout California.

The 2012 AGC of California Constructor Award winners and finalists spanned a diverse array of project types from throughout California. Each of the winners received the specially commissioned award – a solid bronze sculpture weighing nearly six pounds and depicting a surveyor with hardhat and transit. The seven winners were chosen from a field of 19 previously announced finalists, all of whom were spotlighted during the awards evening with each team receiving a finalist plaque recognizing their outstanding efforts in construction. Constructor winners and finalists are all AGC members.
