Encinitas Fire Station #3

Award of Merit: Civic/Public Works

Text size: A A

Needing to build a fire station for the city of Encinitas while an existing fire station remained in operation was one of the most significant challenges for the project team behind Encinitas Fire Station #3.

The existing fire station was outdated and did not meet the requirements for new stations.

However, the old station needed to remain in service in order to provide emergency and fire help for the surrounding area.

HAR Construction built the two-story, 7,256-sq-ft fire station working with city officials and architect Dominy + Associates Architects @ domusstudio.

To build the new station, the project team had to work in phases to accommodate the operations of the existing station. To accomplish this, the project team first demolished the existing station and created a new entry driveway; continuous driveway access for the apparatus had to be maintained at all times.

The project team then moved a temporary trailer on site for the firefighters to use during construction and also set up a system where the station could still use its firefighting apparatus. The coordination of all the concerned parties took a considerable amount of effort and teamwork for a successful completion.
