Stanford University hotel on target for spring opening

By David Silva

After nearly a decade of planning, Stanford University’s five-star Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel in Menlo Park is on target for completion in April.

The 21-acre development includes a 120-room hotel and 160-seat full-service restaurant named Madera. It will also feature 100,000 sq ft of office space, 12,000 sq ft of indoor/outdoor meeting and event space, 12,000 sq ft spa featuring 13 treatment rooms, and valet and concierge service.

“It’s being built as a commercial investment for Stanford University,” says Steven Elliott, managing director of development projects for the university. “We felt there was a demand for a hotel of this type in the area. It’s close to Stanford, and there are a lot of financial firms in the area and Silicon Valley.”

When completed, the 21-acre hotel complex 1 mi west of the Stanford campus will be the largest in Menlo Park. Elliott declined to give the total cost of the endeavor other than it is “in excess of $100 million.” News accounts have placed the figure at around $200 million.

Efforts to obtain entitlements for the property began in 2005, and construction started in earnest in October 2006. Devcon Construction of Milpitas was chosen as general contractor, with HKS Hill Glazier Studios of Palo Alto serving as project architect.

The luxury rooms, which will be rented from about $400 a night, range from a 527-sq-ft unit to 2,372-sq-ft presidential suites. Five 3,000-sq-ft, two- to three-bedroom extended-stay villas will also be available.

Devcon project engineer John Castignoli, says the project has been largely unaffected by recent upheavals in the construction market.

“The residential construction slow-down does not seem to have greatly affected the local hospitality industry,” he adds. “Devcon Construction is currently in the pre-construction phase on two other high-end hotel projects in the area.”
