EUCA Awards $12,000 in Scholarships
SAN RAMON-The Engineering and Utility Contractors Association
recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to 10 students.
Five scholarships were awarded to EUCA affiliates and five
scholarships were awarded to students attending local colleges
majoring in construction management or civil engineering programs.
Fillmore
Sharresa Fillmore was awarded $2,000. She is the daughter
of Larry and Leslee Fillmore. Her father is an employee at
MJB Pipelines. She is currently a senior at Liberty High School
in Brentwood, where she has a GPA of 3.5. She will attend
St. Mary's College in the fall to work toward a degree in
mathematics. Her ultimate goal is to receive a Ph.D. and become
a college professor.
Carbahal
Stephanie Carbahal was awarded $1,000. She is the niece of
Ed Carbahal, an employee at Vintage Paving Inc. She is currently
a senior at Winters High School in Winters, where she maintains
a 4.1 GPA. She will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where
she plans to major in Political Science. She hopes to become
a lobbyist.
McLauchlin
Jason McLauchlin was awarded $1,000. He is the son of Gary
McLauchlin, an employee at Northwest Pipe Co. and Cheryl McLauchlin.
He is a construction management major (3.7 GPA) at Brigham
Young University. After obtaining his B.S. degree, he hopes
to enter the field of commercial and industrial construction
and become a project coordinator.
Schreiber
Eben Schreiber was awarded $1,000. Schreiber works as a subcontractor
for West Valley Construction. He is transferring from Cabrillo
College (3.9 GPA) to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he plans
on obtaining a degree in construction management. He hopes
to become a foreman for a custom home building company.
Watkins
Andrea Watkins was awarded $1,000. Andrea is the wife of Seth
Watkins, an employee at Hanson Aggregates Mid-Pacific Inc.
She has a 4.0 GPA at San Jose State University, where she
plans on obtaining a Masters degree in speech pathology. Watkins
plans on working with adults who find it difficult to obtain
jobs because of language disabilities.
Garcia-Aranda
Jose Garcia-Aranda was awarded $2,000. He is a graduate of
the United States Military Academy at West Point. He maintains
a 4.0 GPA at Stanford University, where he plans on earning
a Masters degree in construction management. He hopes to work
for a leading construction company and eventually establish
his own construction firm.
Hernandez
Gabriel Hernandez was awarded $1,000. He is currently a student
a UC Berkeley, where he maintains a 3.1 GPA. He plans on graduating
this year with a B.S. in civil engineering. He recently finished
an airport planning internship with the Port of Oakland.
Remington
Robert Remington was awarded $1,000. He is a 3.8-GPA student
at California State University, Sacramento, working toward
a B.S. in construction management. He recently received the
2002 Best Overall Student Choice Award from the state Department
of Construction Management.
Tanner
Amber Tanner was awarded $1,000. She is a student at Cal Poly,
San Luis Obispo, where she has a 3.3 GPA. Next year, she will
receive a B.A. in construction management. She hopes to become
a site superintendent for new home developments.
Tsao
Cynthia Tsao was awarded $1,000. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley
and Stanford University, where she received both a B.S. and
Masters of Science degrees in civil engineering. She is currently
pursuing a Ph.D in engineering and project management at UC
Berkeley, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. After obtaining her
Ph.D., she hopes to become a college professor.
EUCA funds the Scholarship program through their annual Scholarship
Golf Tournament as well as through individual donations. Since
its inception in 1994, EUCA and its members have awarded $97,
000 to 54 students.
ABC Names Contractor of the Year
WASHINGTON, D.C-Associated Builders and Contractors recently
presented its Contractor of the Year award to Mark Small,
senior vice president and chief financial officer of Mentor,
Ohio-based Cleveland Construction Inc.
The national association presents this award each year to
an ABC member who has demonstrated significant accomplishments
for ABC, the merit shop and the construction industry.
"Mark played a key role last year in helping ABC accomplish
its goal of electing a free-enterprise majority to the Senate,
and in helping the Trimmer Education Foundation grow stronger
than ever," said ABC President and CEO Kirk Pickerel.
Small served as chairman of ABC's Government Affairs Committee
in 2002, the year that the association established its top
goal of regaining a free-enterprise majority in the U.S. Senate.
Small also served as chairman of the Trimmer Education foundation
in 2002. Under his leadership, the foundation awarded a record
number of student scholarships and education grants to ABC
chapters.
