Awarded Health Care Contracts
Clark Construction Group-California, LP has been awarded
three contracts from San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare
West.

Over the next three
to five years, renovation projects at St. Francis will

Clark was awarded a $20 million preconstruction and construction
contract on Northridge Hospital's diagnostic and treatment
building that includes seismic upgrades to an existing two-story
steel frame structure. RBB of Los Angeles is the architect
and San Francisco-based Degenkolb Engineers is the structural
engineer.
Dominican Hospital awarded Clark a contract for master planning
services. The preconstruction services are in support of campus
master planning, which may include a combination of both renovation
and new construction. Dominican currently has budgeted over
$100 million for the design and construction. The San Francisco
office of HOK is the architect.
Clark recently was awarded preconstruction and construction
contracts from Saint Francis Hospital, a 362-bed facility
on Nob Hill in San Francisco. HOK has designed several renovation
projects at the facility. The first phase of the project involves
the demolition and rebuilding of the emergency department
and seismic retrofit work in the basement. When this phase
begins construction this summer, Clark also will begin work
on the preconstruction for future phases, which include the
demolition and rebuilding of the surgery areas. Over the next
three to five years, renovation projects at Saint Francis
will total over $60 million.
CCDC Offices Completed
The San Diego-based team of Jossy+Carrier Design Group and
Johnson & Jennings General Contracting has completed the
3,400-sq. ft. expansion of offices occupied by Centre City
Development Corp. in the NBC building at 225 Broadway in downtown
San Diego.
American Assets is owner of the 22-story Class A building.
The scope of services provided by Jossy+Carrier Design Group
included programming, space planning, design, construction
documents and contract administration. Subcontractors included
Bergelectric and A.O. Reed & Co.
Granite Awarded Infrastructure
Project
Watsonville-based Granite Construction has been awarded a
$29.5 million site work improvement project in Sacramento
by Metro Air Park LLC.
The MetroParkway and Elkhorn Boulevard improvement project,
adjacent to the Sacramento International Airport, will be
completed by November 2006. The project involves new major
infrastructure improvements, including approximately 4 mi.
of new roadway construction for the Metro Air Park-the initial
development of 1,900 acres of land near Sacramento International
Airport and Interstate 5.
Granite's scope of the work includes 400,000 cu. yds. of
roadway excavation, 50,000 tons of asphalt concrete, 90,000
tons of aggregate base, and 105,000 lin. ft. of underground
sanitary sewer, storm drain and potable water pipelines.
TFW, Ware Malcomb Start Chula Vista Project
San Diego-based developer International Real Estate has begun
construction for the Eastlake Design District in Chula Vista.
Irvine-based Ware Malcomb is the architect for the 217,300-sq.-ft.
home-improvement business park, The general contractor is
San Diego-based TFW Construction.
The project is comprised of five multi-tenant retail showroom
buildings. The showrooms range in size from 2,000 to 40,300
sq. ft. Major tenants include Lane Home Furnishings and Bassett
Furniture Direct. Stainless-steel perforated panels and glazed-façade
storefronts accent an angular tower and corner elements. Tenant
entries incorporate angled elliptical columns, canopies and
prominent signage. Central courtyards are radius plazas with
accent water features and extensive landscaping.
BBI Starts Work on Building in Jack London
Square
Oakland-based BBI Construction has started renovation construction
on 66 Franklin, an 80-year-old building in Oakland's Jack
London Square. BBI is partnering on this design/build project
with Komorous Towey Architects and OLMM Structural Engineers,
both based in Oakland.
The renovation of the 93,000-sq.-ft. structure-formerly home
on the ground floor to the Old Spaghetti Factory and El Torito-has
been more than eight years in the making. It is the first
project in a planned $350 million redevelopment of the square
by owners Jack London Square Partners.
The building's façade is being restored to include
multi-paned windows with metal sash and restored parapets
and pilasters. The existing concrete will be patched and repaired,
or replaced as needed. In addition to new windows, there will
be new storefronts and awnings. A new façade is being
constructed on Webster Street side to match the original that
was demolished.
The building also will get a major seismic upgrade, involving
shotcrete shear walls from the foundation to the roof. The
columns will be tied back to the walls. The soil will be pressure
grouted to enhance its load-carrying capacity since the original
warehouse was built on fill.
Design Underway for Church in El Cajon
San Diego-based Lyons Warren has design underway for a $3
million, 15,000-sq.-ft. church in El Cajon.
Saint Gregory of Nyssa Greek Orthodox Church has been designed
to reflect Greek Mediterranean architecture. The three-phase
project will include a small chapel and offices; multi-purpose
building; and main chapel, featuring a 38-ft.-diameter domed
roof with stained-glass windows. The large-scale church will
incorporate heavy landscaping to reduce its perceived size.
Morrison Engineering is the civil engineer and Wilkinson
Design Group is the landscape architect.
A general contractor has not yet been selected.
Construction Begins on ZCON Youth Center
in Pinole
Oakland-based ZCON Builders has broken ground on a complex
to host the city of Pinole's youth center and community cable-TV
operation.
The project is scheduled to be completed in December. It
includes abatement and demolition of an existing office building,
construction of a 5,300-sq.-ft., two-story building, which
will have youth activities and a public meeting room on the
ground floor and Pinole TV activities on the upper floor.
Other construction activities include the expansion and renovation
of the adjacent Memorial Hall kitchen, construction of a parking
area, covered arcade, raised patio and walkway, lighting and
landscaping, and minor improvements to adjacent Fernandez
Park.
Midwest Starts Monde in Hillcrest Neighborhood
Construction for Monde, a community of 12 two-story townhomes
developed by San Diego-based Up Inc., has begun on University
Avenue and Washington Street in the Hillcrest district of
San Diego.
San Diego-based H2A Architects is responsible for Monde's
design. San Diego-based Midwest General Contractors is scheduled
to complete the project in 10 months.
The average Monde home is approximately 1,575 sq. ft. Elevators,
energy-efficient windows and sound-transmission reduction
will be installed. Open interiors in each Monde unit will
feature high ceilings, granite counters, stainless steel appliances,
hardwood flooring and contemporary high-end fixtures and finishes.
The mixed-use property, with ground-floor commercial space,
will include terraces, landscaped courtyard entrances and
assigned parking for residents.
Morley Finishes $55 Million Lab Building
at USC
Morley Construction Co., a Santa Monica-based general contractor,
has completed the construction of USC's Molecular and Computational
Biology Building.
The 130,000-sq.-ft., $55 million facility will house both
laboratory and computational researchers for basic genome
structure. The structure has four-stories and a basement level
with a vivarium. It features state-of-the-art technology and
laboratory systems, and 18,000 sq. ft. of office space. The
concrete-frame structure features a handset-brick exterior
that matches USC's architectural history.
Project team members included the Los Angeles office of architect
Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, structural engineer John
A. Martin & Associates of Los Angeles and MEP engineer
BR + A.
Sundt to Build Second Classic Residence

The San Diego office of Sundt Construction has broken ground
on a 20-story tower for Classic Residence by Hyatt at La Jolla
Village.
The existing community includes a 21-story residential tower
with a penthouse dining room and other amenities, assisted-living
residences and a care center, and underground parking.
The $70 million project-designed by Nadel Architects of Los
Angeles-is scheduled for a summer 2007 completion.
The second tower will also include multiple dining venues;
a new indoor pool with locker rooms and exercise rooms; conservatory;
reading, computer and billiards rooms; and a grand living
room. The site will be renovated to incorporate a central
circular driveway, walking paths with arbors and landscaped
terraces. After that work is completed, Sundt will remodel
portions of the existing high-rise, including the 21st-floor
restaurant.
Ground Broken on 2 MOBs in San Andreas
Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital, a nonprofit, 48-bed general
acute-care hospital serving Calaveras County, has begun construction
in San Andreas of two medical office buildings totaling 18,000
sq. ft.
The developer/general contractor Lodi-based Diede Construction.
The buildings-one a 5,000-sq.-ft. single-story structure
and the other a 13,000-sq.-ft. two-story structure-will be
erected on a rising grade and have same-level parking to the
upper and lower floors. The buildings will be accessible to
the adjacent hospital by a new pedestrian bridge.
Sacramento-based CRMS Architects designed the $4 million
project. Santa Rosa-based ZFA is the structural engineer.
Gafcon Breaks Ground for Girl Scouts
Gafcon Inc., a San Diego-based construction management and
consulting firm, recently broke ground in Balboa Park for
facilities for the Girl Scouts' Imperial Council.
Construction of the $2.2 million project will include the
Open Circle Amphitheater, Sullivan Square and a multi-purpose
building.
KTU+A designed the amphitheater and Architects Larson Carpenter
designed the multi-purpose building and Sullivan Square.
The project is scheduled for completion in June 2006.
