Ware Malcomb completes Long Beach office park design

Ware Malcomb reports that design has been completed and construction has begun for first phase of Douglas Park Block 2, an office park being developed by Newcastle Partners, Inc. and investment partner RREEF, both headquartered in San Francisco. The project is located at 3900 Cover Street at Worsham Avenue in Long Beach immediately adjacent to the Long Beach Airport.

The 9.89-acre office park project is comprised of three single-story and six two-story buildings totaling 168,052 sq ft, ranging in size from 7,623 to 38,563 sq ft. The project is currently seeking LEED CS certification, and incorporates elements such as native landscaping, recycled water irrigation system, reduced heat island effects through cool “white” roofs, reduced heat gain through glazing/shading elements, increased insulation, day lighting controls systems, reduced flow fixtures, and additional high performance efficiencies.

Millie & Severson of Los Alamitos is serving as the general contractor for the project. Construction is estimated to be completed by June.

Sundt contracted for new Pittsburg courthouse

Sundt Construction, Inc. has been selected by the Judicial Council of California to build a new, three-story, 75,000-sq-ft courthouse building in Pittsburg. The $48.9 million Antioch Courthouse will include seven courtrooms, judges’ chambers, administrative space, a library, conference rooms, and a prisoner holding cell.

The structure will have a structural steel frame with stone and pre-cast veneer and very detailed millwork inside the courtrooms.It will also have a 2,900-sq-ft “green roof” over the jury assembly room, which will be planted with a variety of native grasses.

The project will seek a LEED silver certification.

Completion is scheduled for summer 2010. HOK is the architect.

PCL breaks ground on parking structure

PCL Construction in San Diego started construction on a $16 million parking structure located in the Old Town area of Temecula.

The four level garage is part of the city's civic center complex, which includes a new City Hall and a town square. The parking structure includes 462 spaces in three levels of parking above grade and one below grade.The project also includes 8,400 sq ft of office space for the city.

The project owner is the city of Temecula and the architectural team consists of Nichols, Melburg & Rossetto and Watry Design, Inc. PCL’s construction manager is Jamie Sipes, the project manager is Frank Masuhara and the superintendent is Art Smith. Completion of the project is slated for October.

HGA, Unger complete Sutter’s acute rehabilitation facility in Roseville

The new $40 million Sutter Acute Rehabilitation Institute at Sutter Roseville Medical Center was recently completed.

Designed by HGA Architects and Engineers, the 106,500-sq-ft facility will serve patients disabled by spinal and brain injuries or illness in order to help them achieve maximum functional independence and the ability to return back to the community.

Unger Construction of Sacramento was the general contractor.

The new acute rehabilitation institute includes 40 beds for rehabilitation patients and shell space for an additional 16 beds, which will be added when the community’s need increases. The second floor houses a 30-bed ventilator unit and ancillary support needs.

This is the second formal acute rehabilitation unit at a Sacramento-area Sutter facility.

HGA’s design team for the Sutter Acute Rehabilitation Institute included Bonnie Walker, AIA, principal-in-charge; Stan Chiu, AIA, lead designer; Greg Osecheck, project manager; and Ildefonso de Alba, construction administration.

Consultants included Stephen Short, planner; R+A Engineering, mechanical; ECOM, electrical; Omni-Means, civil; MTW Group, landscape architecture; and Arktegraf, interior design.

San Jose City College design-build project moves ahead

Blach Construction Co. and AEDIS Architecture and Planning were recently selected by the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District to provide design-build services for a new multi-disciplinary classroom and administration building at San Jose City College.

The project will house a combination of classrooms, faculty and staff offices, and separate laboratories for the visual and performing arts programs.

Design and construction will follow a LEED standard, and the project is expected to begin construction in the spring of 2010.

Thang Do, AIA, design principal for AEDIS, says the AEDIS design is noteworthy in its strong focus on sustainability, its unique solution to preserve maximum open space and to enhance the overall campus environment. Key sustainable design features include maximum daylighting, a living roof, an energy wall and photovoltaic roofs.

This project is the latest collaboration in a long history between San Jose-based AEDIS Architecture and Planning and Blach Construction, which now spans more than three decades.

McCarthy completes medical center expansion

McCarthy Building Cos. recently completed construction of a $37-million, 72,000-sq-ft expansion of the Women’s Center and emergency room at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta.

McCarthy's scope of work included construction of a two-story, cast-in-place concrete building featuring stud framing, plaster exteriors, and punched windows. The firm also performed site improvements for 5.5 acres at the property, including construction of a 252-space parking lot with associated site improvements.

HKS Architects of Dallas, served as the project architect and structural engineer. Hunter Associates Texas LTD, a TRC Company based in Dallas, was the civil engineer; and CCRD Partners of Dallas was the electrical and mechanical engineer. San Diego-based KTU+A Landscape Architecture & Planning was the landscape architect.
