Gonsalves & Stronck completes marine mammal center

San Carlos-based Gonsalves & Stronck has finished construction on the Marine Mammal Center, a $20-million veterinary hospital.

The center was developed from a four-acre former missile silo bunker site located in the Marin headlands. Architects Noll & Tam and Scott Dennis Architect designed the project to incorporate sustainable elements, including radiant floor heating, natural daylighting and ventilation and native vegetation.

The underground missile silo bunkers were transformed into spaces to operate the mechanical infrastructure and pumping and filtration systems for the center. The center contains 39 outdoor pens and pools for animals.

The project also included the construction of a retail and educational center, administrative offices and a mechanical shop and locker.

EDGE to build Cal State San Bernardino health center

Temecula-based EDGE Development was awarded the contract for the California State University, San Bernardino Health Center renovation/expansion, a $4 million project designed by RSK Associates. Phase I includes the new concrete tilt-up construction to expand the existing Health Center. This approximately 11,000 sq ft new construction also includes some site work and connection to existing utilities. Phase II work will include the renovation of the existing approximate 11,000 sq ft of existing infrastructure.

Sukut, Flatiron awarded San Diego County freeway project

Santa Ana-based Sukut Construction, Inc., in a joint venture with Flatiron West Inc. of San Marcos, was awarded a $57 million contract by Caltrans to construct the final segment of California Route 905 in San Diego County. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-June and be completed in early 2011.

The finished 905 Freeway will be a 12-mile route to facilitate primarily truck traffic between California and Mexico from the Otay Mesa border crossing northwest to Interstate 5.

The contract calls for construction of five bridges and the final 2.5 mis of a four-lane freeway. Sukut’s portion of the contract totals $20 million and includes site preparation, construction of retaining walls, and installation of underground infrastructure.

Anaheim City Council approves Parsons Brinckerhoff/HOK for ARTIC project

The Anaheim City Council has approved the team of Parsons Brinckerhoff/HOK as the design architects and engineers for phase one of the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center complex. ARTIC is expected to serve as a connectivity gateway and mixed-use destination on a 16-acre site owned by the Orange County Transit Authority and the city of Anaheim.

The design submitted by PB/HOK is a 66,000-sq-ft transportation facility that can add additional space.

The building is expected to seek a LEED Platinum rating.

ARTIC is expected to provide easy connections between various locations in Anaheim and throughout Orange County and is expected to link to the California high-speed rail project.

ARTIC is a multi-year, multi-phase project with each phase coinciding with new and/or expanded transportation services and development. The first phase of this project, valued at approximately $180 million, shall consist of site work and preparation, transportation center and supporting facilities, trackwork and platforms, parking, public art, and access and street improvements. Completion date is expected mid 2013.
