DPR breaks ground on Sutter Medical Center, Castro Valley
The $320-million hospital is expected to take about three years to build and is scheduled to open in January 2013
DPR Construction has broken ground on the $320-million Sutter Medical Center, Castro Valley.
he project includes a 230,000-sq-ft hospital with 130 acute-care beds and a 34-unit universal care center.

Aiming for LEED certification, the project is using an 11-party Integrated Form of Agreement in which the owner, architect, general contractor, key design consultants and trade partners are all co-signatories of the agreement and part of a core Integrated Project Delivery team.
On the Sutter Castro Valley team are architect Devenney Group, Capital Engineering, The Engineering Enterprise, TMAD-Taylor & Gaines, Superior Air Handling, J.W. McClenahan, Morrow Meadows, Transbay Fire Protection and GHAFARI Associates.
The new medical center will include all private rooms within the hospital, as well as an emergency department, urgent care center, trauma center, and OB/maternity services.
With an anticipated hospital opening scheduled for January 2013, the project will have up to 350 people working on site at the height of construction over the next three years.
Following the opening of the new facility, DPR will begin demolition of the adjacent existing hospital, which will remain fully operational throughout the Sutter Medical Center, Castro Valley project.
Hodgdon-Miank Construction starts on Azusa Pacific project
Colton-based Hodgdon-Miank Construction has started construction on the remodel of the 30,000-sq-ft Carl E. Wynn Academic Center for Azusa Pacific University in Azusa.
Hodgdon-Miank Construction and its parent company, the Hodgdon Group, are handling the design, entitlements, construction and construction management for the $4 million project, which includes gutting and remodeling the former Carl E. Wynn Science Center building. The new building will be renamed the Carl E. Wynn Academic Center
The new Carl E. Wynn Academic Center building will include 11 classrooms, 30 administrative and staff offices, 1,800-sq-ft lecture hall, a conference room, small library, computer lab and workrooms, two focus rooms with viewing area. The renovated facility will also include a presentation room for new and prospective students and parents to be introduced to APU. The new facility will house faculty and staff from the master of social work, undergraduate social work, undergraduate psychology and honors programs.
The original building was originally constructed in 1975 and consists of a masonry shell with concrete floors and a metal roof system. The remodel will include a new energy- efficient HVAC system and glass and glazing systems, added insulation, and a new single-ply roof. GAA of Irvine is the project architect.
Clark Construction awarded LAUSD high school
The Los Angeles Unified School District awarded Clark Construction Group – California, LP an $87 million contract to build South Los Angeles Area New High School No. 3.
South Los Angeles Area New High School No. 3 will accommodate 2,025 students and help relieve overcrowding at the nearby Manual Arts Senior High School. Located on a 15-acre campus in south Los Angeles, the project site is adjacent to residential and commercial structures; however, the school’s five buildings will all face an interior courtyard.
The school will include 75 classrooms and provide students with four Small Learning Communities, a national program adopted by LAUSD. Additional school facilities include a library/media center, gymnasium, multipurpose/ performing arts building, and food services.
A 187-space on-grade parking structure will be constructed with 62,000 sq ft of basketball courts on the second level. A football field, competition track, and additional athletic fields face out into the neighborhood and will function as a shared space with the community. South Los Angeles Area New High School No. 3 is the fourth partnership between Clark and the LAUSD. The company completed Central Los Angeles Area High School #10 in 2006 and is currently building LAUSD High School #2/Esteban E. Torres High School and Central Region Middle School #7.
Construction on the project was scheduled to begin in August and final completion is planned for August 2011.
CSDA Architects, Inc., of Marina Del Ray, Calif., is the project architect.
Barnhart completes fire station in Encinitas
Barnhart, Inc. has completed construction of fire station No. 3, a $3.55-million project. The new 7,256-sq-ft, two-story station, which is twice the size of the 1970s-era station demolished on the same site last year, is designed to house one fire engine and a rescue trailer for typical daily response and an additional engine and firefighting personnel when needed to manage large-scale incidents such as wildfires or flooding.
Barnhart, Inc. acted as construction manager, with design services provided by Domusstudio Architecture.
The first floor includes offices, a training classroom, physical fitness area and three oversized bays for fire trucks and other emergency equipment. A living area upstairs includes bedrooms, a dining area, a kitchen and a day room with an outdoor deck. The design includes a number of environmental sustainability features including storm water management, water-wise landscaping, energy- saving lighting and the use of recycled building materials.
Bomel finishes parking garage at El Camino Community College
Anaheim Hills-based Bomel Construction Co. has finished a 1,230-stall parking garage for El Camino Community College in Torrance.
The six-level structure has brick veneer on all sides. It also has two detached glassbacked elevator cores. International Parking Design of Sherman Oaks, Calif., was the project architect.
Bomel completed the project three weeks ahead of schedule.
