Stockton Moves to Restore Historic City
Core
Two other projects are contributing to Stockton's redevelopment
- the restoration of the historic Hotel Stockton and San Joaquin
Regional Transit District's Downtown Transit Center, both
located along El Dorado Street.
The
Hotel Stockton, built in 1910 and named to the National Register
of Historic Places in 1981, wound up in disrepair in the 1990s
and subsequently the city negotiated a public/private collaboration
to restore and convert the building into a mixed-use project.
The city purchased the building in 1999.
The six-story, 145,000-sq.-ft. structure now features 156
affordable rentals and ground-floor retail space.
Randy Paragary's Sacramento-based restaurant group was planning
to open a dining establishment this year in the building.
The restaurant will face El Dorado Street.
CFY Development of Sacramento acted as the general contractor
on the $30 million project as well as a general partner of
investors. Also contributing to the effort was Applied Architecture
of Sacramento, Miayamoto International of Stockton as structural
engineers, and Historical Environment Consultants of Carmichael
as historic consultants.
Meanwhile, phase one of the Downtown Transit Center, the
new, expanded bus passenger boarding area, was completed earlier
this year.
Phase two involves the renovation of three historic building
facades with new construction. The building's front elevation
combines the façades from three century-old buildings
on the west (the "Hart & Thrift" and "Bower"
Buildings) and east (the "Delta" Building) ends
of the building. The center elevation and all of the building
behind the facades will be new construction.
The ground floor of the new facility will be a passenger
concourse, and also contain some RTD offices, a boardroom
and 2,100 sq. ft. of retail. The second floor will be RTD
offices.
Stockton-based F+H Construction is the general contractor.
