Renzel Airfield Project Proceeds
R&L Brosamer Inc. is close to completing a $44 million
airfield improvement project at Mineta San Jose International.
|
In 2005, Mineta San Jose International
Airport served some 10.8 million domestic and international
passengers with 13 commercial airlines. It averaged
179 commercial daily departures and handled 209.3 million
lbs. in domestic and international cargo.
With the completion
of the Terminal Area Improvement Program, the airport
will be able to handle 17.6 million passengers and 315,000
cargo tons annually, as projected for 2017.
|
In December 2003, the city of San Jose renamed the airfield
Ernie Renzel Airfield or Renzel Airfield for short. Ernie
Renzel was the father of the airport.
The Renzel Airfield Improvement Project will resurface both
Taxiway Y and Z, and widen Taxiway Z to provide easier access
to terminal gates. The improvements for both taxiways include
new concrete pavement, edge lighting, drainage, and guidance
signs. By replacing the current asphalt surfaces the taxiways
will require less maintenance as concrete pavement is more
resistant to weather. Relocation and realignment of storm
drainage and sewer lines for the North Concourse is also included
in the project.
As a result of the construction, Taxiways Y and Z will be
closed for the duration of the project. Runway 30L will serve
all commercial aircraft departures and arrivals, while Runway
30R, normally used for departures, will be utilized as a taxiway.
Funding for the project is coming from bond sale proceeds,
Airport Improvement Program grants, Passenger Facility Charges
(PFC) and Airport rates and charges. No local taxes are being
used.
