Jacobs Wins Bridge, Water Storage Projects

PASADENA -- Jacobs Engineering Group's has secured a contract to reconstruct and repair three Florida bridges.

A Jacobs subsidiary won a contract from Lee County, Fla., to provide construction management services to replace and rehabilitate the Sanibel Causeway bridges. The project also involves reconstructing the roadway portion of the causeway islands and replacing the toll facilities at both the Sanibel and Cape Coral bridges.

Because of deteriorating bridge conditions, an accelerated schedule for the $60 million project began last month, with planned completion in early 2006.

The 3-mi. Sanibel Causeway, which crosses San Carlos Bay, opened to traffic in 1963. The facility consists of one bascule bridge, two low-level bridges and two causeway islands. All three bridges have experienced serious structural deterioration that requires emergency repairs. As construction manager, Jacobs will manage the construction and commissioning phases of the project while keeping the existing bridges fully functional.

With a population of 475,000, Lee County covers the cities of Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs.
