AEM Backs U.S.
DOC Standards Initiative
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers supports the new
standards initiative announced recently by United States Secretary
of Commerce Donald Evans.
The U.S. Department of Commerce initiative would improve coordination
with principal trading partners, government agencies and industry
to enhance access for U.S. products and services to the international
marketplace.
Open and fair international markets are extremely important
to the success of our members and U.S. business worldwide. International
standards development is a priority for our board of directors
and the association has been a long-time supporter of 'one standard,
one test and one product accepted globally. We applaud the DOC's
commitment to highlighting the importance of achieving good
globally accepted standards and product tests.
The DOC standards initiative includes an eight-point plan to
address the needs of U.S. companies in establishing fair and
consistent global standards. AEM supports the Bush administration's
leadership on this important business issue and the visibility
it brings to the subject. The association looks forward to working
toward development and implementation of this plan as a way
of removing non-tariff trade barriers.
In this era of global economics, manufacturers of all sizes
are looking to the government for assistance on standards issues.
This initiative to advance international standards should lead
not only to more effective trade partnerships, but also to an
improved understanding of product technology that will benefit
both manufacturers and their customers around the world.
