Michael Friedlander Named CEO at The Jerde
Partnership
The Jerde Partnership, an international architecture and
urban planning firm, has tapped Michael Friedlander as its
new chief executive officer.
Friedlander is responsible for Jerde's global business strategy.
Founder and chairman Jon Jerde, FAIA, will continue to be
the creative force behind the firm's designs.
"This is one of the most exciting times at The Jerde
Partnership," said Jerde said. "Our portfolio includes
more than 90 built projects in 70 cities that attract nearly
1 billion visitors each year. With 56 new projects on the
board in more than 30 cities, we are busier than we have ever
been before.
"Mike will help put together a solid business infrastructure
and growth plan for our enormously successful design practice."
As an attorney specializing in internal business, South African
born Friedlander has represented clients in business transactions
in Asia, Europe, Canada, South Africa, South and Central America.
In 1997, he co-founded RhythmRadio Corp. with radio icon Shadoe
Stevens-who as host of the weekly program "American Top
40," had a global audience of 1 billion listeners -and
three-time Grammy-winning songwriter Charlie Midnight.

Hong Chen Named Associate Principal at
San Jose Firm
San Jose-based Steinberg Architects has promoted Hong Chen,
AIA, to associate principal at Steinberg Architects,
Chen is design director, responsible for maintaining the
firm's design excellence goals.
"Hong Chen has a profound understanding of great design's
ability to shape lives and communities, a core value of our
firm," said firm president Robert T. Steinberg, FAIA.
His most recent projects include: Ronald McDonald House at
Stanford, Palo Alto, Calif.; Evergreen Valley College Library
& Education Technology Center, San Jose; Lakeshore East
Park Homes, Chicago; Campus for Jewish Life, Palo Alto; and
Park View Towers, San Jose.
Chen received a master's degree in architecture from UC Berkeley
and studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Dolim Joins San Diego Developer
The San Diego office of Newland Communities has hired Anthony
Dolim as vice president, finance.
For the past nine years, Dolim previously spent nine years
in the Irvine-based Fremont Investment and Loan, a national
commercial and residential real estate lender. His most recent
position at Fremont was vice president, regional manager,
responsible for a portfolio of loans totaling approximately
$1.4 billion secured by commercial and condominium projects
throughout the U.S.
Dolim has an MBA in finance from the Anderson School of Management
at UCLA.
Carter & Burgess Names New Practice
Leader
Mike Davis has joined the Oakland office of Carter &
Burgess as environmental practice leader and program manager
for the company's transportation programs. He will be a vice
president.
Davis has 20 years of environmental planning experience in
the transportation industry. He has conducted environmental
reviews for transit system expansions in Texas, Illinois and
California, including the recent EIS for the new San Francisco-Oakland
Bay Bridge east span. He has a master of urban and regional
planning degree from Texas A&M University.
Ware Malcomb Makes Several Moves
Ware Malcomb, an Irvine-based leading architecture, planning
and interior design firm, has promoted one staffer and hired
four new ones.
Don Cordova has been promoted to senior job captain in Ware
Malcomb's commercial department in its Los Angeles office.
Cordova joined Ware Malcomb in January 2000.
In other moves, Lonnie Wick, Robert Pankey, Albert Barcelo
and Scott Myers recently joined the firm.
Wick and Pankey, senior project architects; Barcelo, project
manager; and Myers, senior job captain, have joined Ware Malcomb's
commercial department in its Irvine office.
Ali, Flautz Promoted at JZMK
JZMK Partners, a Newport Beach-based architecture firm, has
promoted Wais Ali and Ryan Flautz to associate level.
Ali, a senior designer, oversees the design process of hospitality/resort
projects.
Flautz is residential production manager for the architectural
studio. He has been with JZMK for nine years.
Henderson to Manage Marketing at Snyder Langston
Snyder Langston, and Irvine-based general contractor, has
expanded its marketing team.
Karen Henderson, an advertising and marketing veteran, recently
joined the firm in the newly created position of marketing
manager.
Additional new hires include Marita Grimes, receptionist/office
services assistant; and Cyndi Benitez and Maxine Flores, project
coordinators.
Benitez has been assigned to the Legacy Building Series at
Dominguez Technology Center in Carson, Presbyterian Church
of the Master in Mission Viejo; and Mercedes Benz of Valencia.
Flores has been assigned to the "Harbor Lofts at Parcel
D," a downtown Anaheim project of Los Angeles-based CIM
Group.
HDR Adds Senior PM in Pasadena Office
HDR, a Minneapolis-based national architecture, engineering
and consulting firm, recently hired Antoinette Bunkley as
a senior project manager.
Bunkley has 20 years of experience focused on research facilities,
including laboratories, vivaria and nanotechnology facilities.
New BDM for Swinerton's Interiors Group
Marvin Peper joined Swinerton Builders' Interiors Group as
business development manager.
Peper has 30 years of experience and an MBA in international
business and management from Golden Gate University in San
Francisco.
San Jose GC Hires Senior PM; Promotes 2
to Project Executive
San Jose-based XL Construction hired John Boneso to senior
project manager and promoted Derek Kirkland to director of
preconstruction services and Alan Laurlund and Steve Winslow
to project executives.
Boneso previously was with BN Builders and has 25 years of
experience. Laurlund, previously a senior project manager,
is LEED-accredited. Winslow formerly was senior project manager.
He has been with XL for 10 years.
Noll & Tam Names New Associate Principal
Noll & Tam, a Berkeley-based architecture firm, has named
Merideth Marschak as associate principal. Marschak will be
director of operations. She has been a licensed architect
for 27 years and is currently the project manager for the
major modernization program at Cañada College in Redwood
City.
