HMC Architects Expands Health-Care Staff
Joan M. Whaley has been named vice president of health care
for HMC Architects and will be based in San Diego. Whaley
previously was principal/health-care director in the Irvine
office of Ewing Cole. Whaley is the author of "Wellness
Centers," a book that provides planning and development
guidelines and case examples of successful wellness centers
around the world. Her work in this field includes the Genesis
Institute in Clarkson Valley, Mo.; Center of Health Improvement
at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan.; and Del Norte Community
Wellness Center in Crescent City.
John L. Miller also was named vice president of health care
for HMC. He will be based in Sacramento. Miller previously
owned and operated his own firm, Portland, Ore.-based Miller
Technika Architecture + Planning, where he provided consulting
and design services for such facilities as Desert Hospital
in Palm Springs and White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Michael Roush is HMC's new health care studio leader in San
Diego. He previously was a project manager in the Columbus,
Ohio, office of Seattle-based NBBJ. Roush's projects include
the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich.; and Greater
Baltimore Medical Center.
Corazon Roush has been hired by HMC as a senior health care
planner in San Diego. She previously was a project manager/planner
with Columbus, Ohio-based Moody/Nolan Inc. Her projects include
Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio; and Women's
Hospital of Indianapolis, Ind.
Natalie Thomas was named an HMC senior project manager in
San Jose. She previously was with San Jose-based Cuschieri
Horton. Thomas has managed such projects as the Hospital In-Patient
Radiology and Angiography Remodel at the UC Davis Medical
Center and Kaiser Permanante's medical office building in
Mountain View.
Jacqueline Lu is a new senior project manager in San Diego.
Lu previously worked as a senior architect, project manager
and facilities planner for UC San Diego. Her health care experience
includes the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest and Kaiser Permanente
facilities in several cities.
Meis Named President of Nadel Architects
Dan Meis, AIA and an award-winning architect, has joined
Los Angeles-based Nadel Architects Inc. as president.
Meis most recently owned his own design studio, where he
had collaborated in the past year with Nadel on several projects.
Herb Nadel, FAIA, will continue in his role as chief executive
officer and work with Meis on strategic positioning and design
leadership of the firm.
While with Seattle-based NBBJ as design partner, Meis created
the design for Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. His
design of Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati was the first NFL
stadium to win an AIA design award. Named to Time magazine's
Top 100 Innovators in the World of sports, he also is a two-time
winner of the Business Week/Architectural Record Award, which
recognizes the value of design to a client's business.
Meis began his career in the Chicago office of Murphy/Jahn.
Mentored by Helmut Jahn, Meis worked on several award-winning
office towers in Chicago, New York, Germany and South Africa.
He continued his career at Ellerbe Becket where, in 1994,
he rose to prominence by winning the international design
competition for the $750-million Saitama Arena in Japan. In
1995, he joined the Los Angeles office of NBBJ as Design Partner,
where he garnered several more awards for his designs of sports,
entertainment, and convention facilities.
Decker Joins Carter & Burgess in Oakland
Unit
Ralph Decker has joined Carter & Burgess as architectural
group leader in its facilities unit in Oakland.
Decker, who served formerly as executive vice president with
San Francisco-based Fisher Friedman Associates, has 18 years
of experience in planning, programming, design and management
of major architectural projects.
Decker has extensive design and planning experience in the
higher-education and health-care markets.
HDR Names Berk Vice President
Minneapolis-based HDR, an architectural, engineering and
consulting firm, has named Jeffrey Berk vice president. He
will be based in the firm's Orange County office.
Berk is an environmental engineer and business development
manager with more than 17 years of experience overseeing large
municipal projects.
T.Y. Lin Hires Associate VP
San Francisco-based T.Y. Lin International has hired Dr.
Mousa Abbasi as associate vice president and will lead its
new Santa Rosa office. He has 24 years experience, including
expertise in the management and implementation of Intelligent
Transportation Systems projects.
For the last two years, Abbasi was responsible for business
development and project management for multiple traffic engineering
projects in Northern California. He has also completed projects
throughout the U.S., including the development of regional
ITS architecture in northeastern Illinois and a system engineering
manual for Caltrans' District 7 Traffic Operations Center.
Abbasi is a registered traffic engineer and civil engineer.
He received a Ph.D. in transportation engineering from Michigan
State University.
Tsuchida Promoted to Vice President
Sundt Construction Inc. of San Diego has promoted former
business development manager Robin Tsuchida to a company vice
president.
Tsuchida joined Sundt in 2000 after 20 years in architecture.
Her career includes roles as company principal, project manager
and director of business development. As a registered architect,
her project experience includes commercial buildings, research
labs, military facilities and senior housing.
Masson & Associates Adds Project Engineer
Dr. Jodi Farrington, P.E., has joined Escondido-based Masson
& Associates Inc., a civil engineering, land surveying
and land development consulting firm, as project engineer.
Farrington has 14 years experience in civil engineering,
including management of federal and municipal projects; coordination
and management of large private and commercial projects; organization
of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers; and construction
management.
Farrington received a doctorate of philosophy, civil engineering,
from Clemson University.
Scott Joins PDS as Project Executive
Aliso Viejo-based Project Delivery Services, a real estate
consulting firm that provides construction planning, oversight
and risk management expertise to owners and developers of
residential and commercial projects, has named John F. Scott
project executive.
Scott is currently overseeing all aspects of development
and construction for Dos Lagos, a 468-acre master-planned
community in Corona. He has 18 years of experience in such
markets as retail, office, mixed-use, hospitality, community
development, entertainment, institutional and medical.
He previously was the lead project manager for Costa Mesa-based
Architectural Construction Services. Prior to that, he was
a senior consultant with Faithful & Gould Inc. in Long
Beach, where he was responsible for directing the company's
project management activities, conducting client needs assessments
and playing a key role in the start up of all construction
management and general contract projects.
He also has worked for Morse Diesel International Inc. in
San Francisco, Rancho Cucamonga-based Grand Pacific Building
Services Inc., Colorado-based R.A.S. Builders Inc., and Denver-based
Porter-McLeod Construction Inc.
