San Francisco-based SMWM Names 3 New Principals

San Francisco-based SMWM, an architecture, planning, and urban design firm, has named Evan Rose, Sowmya Parthasarathy and Prakash Pinto as principals.

Rose, associate AIA, is an urban designer who has served as lead designer and project manager on such commissions as planning and urban design for Mission Bay in San Francisco and intermodal transportation terminals for San Francisco and Sacramento.

Pinto, AIA, associate principal and studio director for SMWM's planning and urban design team is trained as an urban designer and architect. He has been a project designer and project manager for a number of large-scale land use plans and other commissions for the Port of Los Angeles. He has a master of architecture degree from UC Berkeley and a master of architecture degree in urban design from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.

Parthasarathy, AICP, LEED, associate principal, is an urban designer and planner, and director of SMWM LLP in New York. She was project manager for the Harvard Futures Strategic Master Plan, which explored Harvard's options for long-term growth in Allston. Other commissions include: 125th Street Harlem River-to-River Study, New York; the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative in Washington, D.C.; and a strategic master plan for Brown University's expansion. Parthasarathy has a master's degree in urban design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Carter & Burgess Adds McGaughey

Michael McGaughey, P.E., has joined Carter & Burgess as senior project manager and Los Angeles area aviation practice leader in its transportation programs division.

McGaughey, who previously served as senior manager of transportation facilities with Swinerton Management & Consulting, has 25 years of experience in design and construction management for aviation, civil engineering and building projects.

His aviation projects include the security program at Los Angeles International Airport and airfield projects at John Wayne Santa Ana and Fullerton airports.

McGaughey holds a master's degree in civil engineering from UC Berkeley.

Avila Design Promotes 2

Oakland-based architecture firm Avila Design has promoted Jeffrey Schmierer and Yick Chan to senior associates.

Schmierer joined the firm in 1999 as an entry level draftsman, completing Old Navy retail stores.

Chan, Avila's design director, has been with Avila Design since 2003. He is the lead designer on all special projects.

His recent work includes prototype designs for Lexy Layns in Roseville, Big O Tires in Dublin, Berkland Foundation Residences in Berkeley, Los Banos Community Center and Bay Ship and Yacht in Alameda.

PB Names Dimmock SF Area Manager

Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas has named Mark Dimmock area manager in its San Francisco office.

Dimmock previously served as an executive in PB's Sydney, Australia, office. He has 15 years of experience in the design and planning of civil infrastructure projects. Some of the firm's current projects in the area include BART extensions to Warm Springs and Santa Clara, Central MUNI Subway, Metropolitan Transportation Commission's Regional Rideshare program and MTC's 511 TravInfo project.

AGC of California Elects New Officers

Associated General Contractors of California has elected new members for 2006 to its board of directors and divisions.

Officers elected include President Mark Lindquist, M. A. Lindquist Co. Inc. of Oakland; Senior Vice President Steve Blois, Blois Construction Inc. of Oxnard; Vice President Wayne Lindholm, Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Irvine; Treasurer Bob Hall, J.R. Roberts Corp. of Citrus Heights; and Immediate Past President/2005 President John Franich of Granite Construction Co., Watsonville.

Thomas T. Holsman, AGC's CEO, serves as secretary of the 1,100-member statewide association.

Jokanovich Is New CFO at SCS Engineers

Nick Jokanovich has been named chief financial officer of Long Beach-based SCS Engineers. He has been a CPA for 20 years, and in a CFO capacity for the last 10 years.

Jokanovich previously worked for a real estate developer based in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, a company with assets in excess of $500 million, annual sales in excess of $100 million and more than 1,700 employees.

Meléndrez Honored By ASLA

Lauren Meléndrez, president and founder of Los Angeles-based Meléndrez, was one of 41 landscape architects in the United States who were recently inducted into the American Society of Landscape Architects' Council of Fellows, a designation that acknowledges extraordinary work, leadership, knowledge and service to the profession over a sustained period of time. It's one of the highest honors ASLA may confer upon a landscape architect.

Meléndrez is a Southern California-based landscape architecture, planning and urban design firm currently working on a range of projects throughout the Southern California region, including the Del Mar Station Transit Village in Pasadena, Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Light Rail Transit Project (which will link Downtown Los Angels with East Los Angeles) and the new Los Angeles Police Department Headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.

SCCA Installs New Officers

The Southern California Contractors Association has installed new officers and directors: President Doyle Powell, D. W. Powell Construction of Fontana; Vice President David Elsberry, LT Engineering of Laguna Niguel; Secretary Seth Hammond, Specialty Crane and Rigging of Goleta; and Treasurer Don MacIntosh, A. L. MacIntosh Co. of Pico Rivera.

Six new directors, whose terms start this year, were also installed: John Blakely, Kring and Chung LL of Irvine; Stanley Howard, Howard Contracting of Hawaiian Gardens; Rene Isenhart, Western Paving Contractors of Irwindale; Darin McCoy, Don McCoy Corp. of San Juan Capistrano; Larry Nodland, Nobest Inc. of Westminster and Greg Vena, Quinn Companies of Whittier.

RNL Expands Los Angeles Staff

The Los Angeles office of RNL Design has added six employees to its staff.

Steve Paddock joined RNL as senior project architect. He is working on the Orange County Water District Laboratory project in Yorba Linda.

Kara Newmark is a project architect. She is working on a 150-unit assisted living project and RNL's international projects.

Michael Kirollos is a project coordinator. He is involved with RNL's international studio and is also working on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Division Six Transportation Replacement facility in West Los Angeles.

Anne Scheffels is a project coordinator. She received a master's degree in architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture.
Gabriel Salinas is an architectural intern. She is working with the international studio on a major residential project in the Middle East.

Martin Vasquez is an architectural intern. He is working on the Orange County Water District Laboratory and assisted-living projects.

And Amber Roberts joined RNL as a marketing assistant.

Mansell Joins TSA Contracting

Brian Mansell has joined TSA Contracting, a San Diego-based construction company, as project manager.

The 12-year construction veteran will oversee construction of Faraday Spectrum, a new office complex planned in Carlsbad that involves ground up construction of nine tilt-up buildings.

Mansell previously was a consultant to commercial contractors as well as a project manager at DPR Construction.

He began his career in the mechanical field.
