Paint Store Building, Gold River
Nacht & Lewis Architects, Buehler & Buehler Structural
Engineers and the Heller Co. saw the potential of converting
a 38-year-old paint store built to an office building. The
20,000-sq.-ft., two-story building is located in an area south
of downtown Sacramento that is experiencing renewed growth.

Giving the building a vibrant design image without compromising
its character and accommodating the tenants (Nacht & Lewis,
a 34-person architectural firm on the 11,000-sq.-ft. lower
floor; and Buehler & Buehler, a 40-person structural engineering
firm on the 9,000-sq.-ft. second floor) without isolating
any functions in the interior portion of the footprint were
two of the initial goals.
The design team respected the existing strengths and character
and provided a new image. An exterior signage band was refurbished
with LED lights and all functions within the perimeter, two-story-high
space were treated as sculptural objects. SMUD gave a subsidy
under its Customer Advanced Technologies program for the LEDs.
Viewed easily from the exterior, the lights give a fresh,
contemporary character to the building.
The direction for the interior was to maximize the use of
daylight, be minimal and pragmatic with material usage and
transparent and expressive of natural finishes.
The new entry was relocated to the corner of 6th & Q
streets. An existing curved stair was also relocated to the
entry and wrapped around the new elevator. The elevator shaft
is topped with a skylight and sheathed in corrugated translucent
panels. An interior glass wall completes the definition of
the building lobby.
"The Heller Co. was fortunate to
work with NLA, who along with the balance of the design
and construction team, were able to recognize the building's
potential. The use of color and various finish selections
to accentuate all of the project's strong points, balanced
with a cutting-edge yet functional interior design created
the award-winning addition to our portfolio."

The second story is set back 20 ft. from the north and west
window walls, which takes advantage of 20-ft.-high glass panes
as a daylight source.
Every workspace within the building has at least two views
to the outside and offices have at least one glass wall to
transmit daylight. Additional daylight is drawn in with eight
new skylights.
To meet the tight design and construction deadlines, the
team chose the design/build process. The general contractor,
A.P. Thomas Construction, was involved from the start. The
construction documents were a permit set with the details
worked out in the field.
Construction was was completed in just 14 weeks.
