| UC Davis Activities
and Recreation Center, Davis
The
$32 million facility combines a variety of different uses,
supporting the latest trends in student activity and recreation.
The center totals 155,000 sq. ft. and houses a conference
center, student union and fitness club. Other amenities include
large windows that fill the interior with natural light, an
arching roof over the main entrance and a bridge linking the
facility to the existing Recreation Hall.
The center's sports and fitness area includes a four-lane,
rubberized jogging track on the upper floor; four basketball
courts that are convertible to volleyball and badminton courts;
a multi-use court suitable for indoor soccer; racquetball/squash
courts, weights/aerobics equipment; four group fitness rooms;
a climbing wall; and lockers/showers. The activity zone contains
a large ballroom, cafe, lounge, three meeting rooms and offices
for student clubs. The facility also includes a landscaped
courtyard.
"McCarthy's dedication to developing
a team atmosphere ...and their focus on site safety,
enabled McCarthy to deliver a cost-effective facility
within the designated budget and time frame."

project manager, UC Davis architect

The ARC was built with a recordable incident rate of zero
(no injuries). The project's safety record can be attributed
to the plan developed for the center, which included specific
protocols and holding regular safety meetings.
Additionally, to better achieve budget and schedule parameters,
Geopiers, a drilled foundation system, was used in place of
12-ft. over-excavation and recompacting of the building site.
