Marvin Engineering, Inglewood

Nadel designed the $15-million headquarters building for Marvin Engineering Co., an innovative manufacturer of mechanical assemblies for the aerospace and defense industries.

The three-story, 135,000 -sq.-ft. building serves as the hub of a larger campus redevelopment, incorporating R&D laboratories, high-tech manufacturing, corporate offices, teleconferencing, and subterranean parking.

The architecture captures the intersection of machine and art, reflecting the inner workings of the company. Industrial exterior finishes such as site-cast concrete in various textures, and three types of custom corrugated metal siding reinforce the concept of manufacture and assembly.

The building entrance is a unique canvas for the thematic display of Marvin's historical past, a two-story steel and glass cylindrical volume that recalls the shape of the mechanical parts produced by Marvin Engineering.
